# Van leasing for scaffolders

**Yes, scaffolding limited companies and LLPs lease dropsides, tippers and crew cabs from FleetMe on business contract hire. Payload is the whole conversation: tube and fittings reach the 3.5-tonne limit fast. Sole traders hire over terms up to 12 months instead.**

Scaffolding is the trade where the weight limit and the workload argue with each other most. Tube, fittings and boards are heavy, the gang has to travel with the kit, and the vehicle spends its life being loaded by hand at the kerbside. Getting the body and the weight rating right at the start saves you running two vehicles or running one illegally.

## Why does a standard 3.5-tonne vehicle run out of payload?

A car licence obtained from 1 January 1997 covers vehicles up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (GOV.UK, driving licence categories, 2026), and that limit includes the vehicle, the crew, the fuel and the load. Scaffold tube and fittings are among the densest loads any trade carries, so a dropside that looks half empty can already be over. A crew cab makes it tighter still, every seat filled is roughly 75–90kg gone. If your loads genuinely need more capacity, the honest answer is a heavier vehicle rather than a bigger body on the same chassis, and that is a licence decision as much as a leasing one, because a car licence passed from 1 January 1997 carries no entitlement above 3,500kg.

## Dropside, tipper or flatbed?

A dropside is the default because three-sided access makes hand-loading tube and boards far quicker, and the lighter body leaves more payload than a tipper. A tipper is useful if you also shift muck or want to tip boards off, but the gear costs you weight. A tail lift saves backs on heavy fittings and takes a chunk of payload in exchange, worth it for some operations, not for others. Whatever you choose, the specification goes in your quote in writing so there is no argument later about what was included.

## How secure does a scaffold load have to be?

Loose tube on a dropside is one of the loads DVSA looks hardest at, and an insecure load can bring a roadside prohibition regardless of whether you are within weight. Proper stanchions, straps rated for the job and a sensible loading pattern matter as much as the vehicle. Think about it at spec stage: the number and position of the stanchion pockets, whether you want a mesh headboard, and how the load is restrained are all things to settle before the vehicle is built rather than after the first stop. DVSA publishes load securing guidance covering vans, trailers and goods vehicles, and an examiner who finds a load putting people in immediate danger can issue an immediate prohibition and a fixed penalty (DVSA, load securing: vehicle operator guidance, 2026).

## Not a limited company?

Business contract hire is for **limited companies and LLPs**. If you trade as a sole trader, or you want the vehicle in your own name, what we can supply is **vehicle hire of up to 12 months** instead. Incorporating is the step that opens up business contract hire over terms up to 12 months, which is why plenty of tradespeople do it before taking on a van.

## Common questions

### Can a scaffolder work within a 3.5-tonne limit?

Many do, but only by loading conservatively and planning trips. Tube and fittings are dense, so a full crew and a full load will often exceed it. Weigh the vehicle loaded before you assume otherwise.

### Is a crew cab worth it for a scaffolding gang?

It saves running a second vehicle, which is a real cost. The trade-off is payload: the extra cab weight plus filled seats can take a few hundred kilograms out of what you can carry.

### Can I have a tail lift fitted?

It can form part of the specification, agreed with us in writing before the vehicle is supplied. Bear in mind a tail lift is heavy and reduces payload, so it is a genuine trade-off rather than a free upgrade.

### What happens at the end of the contract with a scaffolding vehicle?

Bodies used for scaffolding take a beating, so it is worth understanding fair wear and tear before you sign. Our end-of-lease condition guide sets out what is normally accepted and what is chargeable.

### Do you deal with scaffolders who are not limited companies?

Contract hire is for limited companies and LLPs. If you trade as a sole trader the route is hire of up to 12 months instead, and incorporating is what makes a bodied vehicle on a multi-year contract possible.
