Which Toyota?
A small van and a hybrid estate, which is an odd pair until you look at what they are for.
The Proace City is the compact van for work that is more drops than loads, with a payload around 1,000kg that is strong for its class. The Corolla Touring Sports is a self-charging hybrid estate with a 596-litre boot, and it is the answer for a high-mileage driver who has nowhere to plug anything in.
They share a badge and nothing else. Pick on the job, not the maker.
On the van: a class-leading payload figure is a brochure number, and what you actually get is that figure minus racking, minus ply lining, minus the tools that live in the van, minus the crew and the fuel. On a compact van a full fit-out can take a third of it. Work it out on the payload calculator before you decide the small van is enough, because the cost of being wrong is a second vehicle.
On the car: self-charging is the point. There is no plug and no charging to arrange, so it suits a driver doing real mileage between sites, or anyone whose home parking makes an electric car a daily argument. It will not match a plug-in hybrid or an EV on benefit-in-kind, nothing that burns petrol will, so it is the right call when charging is genuinely not available and the wrong one when it is.
