Which Vauxhall?

Four Vauxhall vans on short hire, and the whole choice is size — which is a harder question than it sounds.

The Combo is the small one: car-sized to park, and the right answer when the job is drops in town and the real constraint is the street rather than the payload. The 2300 version of the same van is rated to carry more weight without being any bigger, which is worth the difference only if weight is actually what runs out first. The Vivaro is the medium van and the usual landing place, short wheelbase and standard roof, so it still fits a parking bay and a height barrier. The Movano is the long one at 3.5 tonnes, and it is about LENGTH rather than weight — timber, pipe, ducting.

Most people over-buy here. The honest test is what you carry on an average day, not the worst day of the year: a business that needs a Movano once a month is usually better off on a Vivaro and hiring the big one for that day. Work the figures on the payload calculator before you decide, because a fit-out and a crew take a surprising amount out of a brochure payload.

All four are on the short-hire terms: three months minimum, 2,500 miles a month, servicing and maintenance included. The rate is higher than a twelve-month agreement, and that is the trade — the vehicle has to earn its keep in a quarter rather than a year, so it suits work that is busy and finite rather than steady and long.
