For muck, spoil and aggregate

Tipper van leasing

A tipper empties a load of aggregate or spoil without shovelling it, and limited companies and LLPs lease one from FleetMe on business contract hire. Plan on roughly one bulk bag at 3.5 tonnes, because the tipping gear is heavy. Sole traders hire over terms up to 12 months.

The single most useful thing anyone can tell you about a 3.5-tonne tipper is how little it carries. A bulk bag of sand or ballast is close to a tonne on its own, and the tipping body and ram that make the vehicle worth having are themselves heavy. Two bags is not a realistic plan. One bag, the gang's tools and a passenger is.

The one-bag rule, and why it holds

Start from the 3,500kg ceiling, subtract the weight of the chassis cab, then subtract the tipping body, the ram and the subframe. What remains has to cover the driver, anyone else in the cab, fuel, tools and the load. A bulk bag of sand, ballast or gravel is typically around a tonne, and that is before it has been rained on, which adds weight you did not order. This is why experienced groundworkers load one bag and go back rather than trying to do a two-bag day in one trip. Guide payload for the tipper we supply is on its vehicle page, and it is quoted for the vehicle as built.

What overloading actually costs

This is not a paperwork risk. DVSA can stop an overloaded vehicle at the roadside, issue a fixed penalty and prohibit the vehicle from moving until the excess is taken off, which means the load and often the day are lost as well. Insurers can take a view on a vehicle being used outside its limits. The practical defence is dull and effective: know the vehicle's real payload with the body fitted, load to it rather than to the top of the sides, and put the loaded vehicle over a public weighbridge once so the figure in your head is a measured one. Loose loads also have to be secured and sheeted so nothing leaves the vehicle in transit.

Waste carrying, and what the body goes through

If you take waste away from a customer's site you generally need to be registered as a waste carrier with the Environment Agency, or Natural Resources Wales in Wales. Registration runs at two tiers, an upper tier that carries a fee and is renewed every three years and a lower tier that is not renewed (GOV.UK, waste carrier, broker or dealer registration, 2026). Worth settling before you build a business around muck-away. The other thing to plan for now is condition: a tipper body takes a harder life than any panel van, and fair wear and tear has a defined meaning at hand-back. Our end-of-lease condition guide sets out what is normally accepted, which is a better conversation to have in year one than in year four.

Sourced to order, priced on application

A tipper van is not one of the vehicles we hold a standing rate for, so there is no guide price on this page and we will not invent one. We source it against your specification (body, length, tail lift, payload) and quote it individually. Tell us what the work needs and we will come back with a written figure.

The vehicles we do price as standard, with their monthly rentals, are on the stock list.

Not a limited company?

Business contract hire is for limited companies and LLPs. If you trade as a sole trader, or you want the vehicle in your own name, what we can supply is vehicle hire of up to 12 months instead. Incorporating is the step that opens up business contract hire over terms up to 12 months.

What does your tipper van need to do?

Vehicle type
Can you supply any make or model?

The vehicles on our stock list are the ones we hold a rate for, so they are the quickest to quote. Anything else we source to order, which takes longer and is priced individually, so ask and we will tell you what it costs. Every figure on this site is a guide price: availability and factory lead times move, and we confirm the exact vehicle, term, mileage and monthly rental in writing before anything is agreed. If we cannot get what you have asked for, we will say so.

Common questions

How many bulk bags can a 3.5-tonne tipper carry?

Realistically one. A bulk bag of aggregate is around a tonne, and the tipping body and ram have already taken a substantial share of the payload before you load. Anyone promising two on a 3.5-tonne tipper is not counting the driver.

Tipper or dropside?

A tipper if you move loose material and want to empty it without shovelling. A dropside if you carry boards, blocks and long materials that come off by hand or by grab. It is lighter, so it carries more, and it gives you access from three sides.

Do I need a waste carrier registration?

Generally yes if you remove waste from a customer site, and it runs at two tiers (GOV.UK, waste carrier, broker or dealer registration, 2026). Check which tier your work falls into before relying on the vehicle for muck-away.

What happens to the body at the end of the contract?

It is assessed against fair wear and tear like any other part of the vehicle. Tipper bodies take heavy use, so read the end-of-lease condition guide early and keep the body maintained rather than hoping for the best at hand-back.

Can a sole trader groundworker lease a tipper?

Not a lease, as an individual, the product for a sole trader is vehicle hire of up to 12 months. Business contract hire over terms up to 12 months is available to limited companies and LLPs, which is why many groundworkers incorporate before taking on a tipper.
